Ever wonder about Business Cards - how they originally came into use? Well, it is said that the calling card is believed to have originated in China (an old country!).

The first known use in Europe occurred in Italy during the latter part of the Sixteenth Century, and the custom thereafter spread to France, and then to Great Britain.

Originally intended to be made for the nobility, to hand to a footman when paying a call, or, the card was left at the home when the person called upon was absent, the use of the calling card gained impetus during the reign of Louis XVI when a custom developed in France to use them when paying New Year's calls.

This vogue for calling cards caused a demand for cases to protect the cards. These cases were made of porcelain, chased metals - some set with semi-precious stones - mother of pearl, petit point embroidered ribbon, and the like.

Originally the calling cards were made by a calligrapher and bore not only the name of the individual, but he owner's hereditary titles. It was but a small step to further embellish these cards with borders, scrolls, flower designs and other ornamentations.

Early in the Nineteenth Century these embellishments were abandoned - both in this country, where the cards had been adopted, and abroad - in favor of only a fine piece of card on which the individual's name only was engraved.

Today's cards are used primarily for businesses, but we do see a few individuals ordering their own personal calling cards. The business cards of today are of many different types of papers, many different colors of ink. Business cards are available in quantities of 500 or 1000 and up. Turn around time varies depending on the complexity of the card. Fairly simple one or two color imprinted one side can be ready for shipment to you in as little as 48 hours.

Some of our clients choose to have their cards printed in Master Runs. This is commonly done when their "company colors" are non-standard ink colors. The cards are printed in quantities of 5000 or more and are then completed in standard ink colors as needed (quantities of 500 or 1000 or more).

A popular business card today is placed in a magnet. On a thin white vinyl, one color magnets are very inexpensive - $.19 ea. for 500, or $.17 for 1000. Full color magnets are $.30 ea. for 500 or $.24 ea. for 1000 or $.18 for 2500! We all use magnets on our refrigerators and/or file cabinets, don't we? (gotta keep the family photos and the grandkids' artwork handy!)
